Parking Lots and Karma

Random thought for today: I don't get it when able-bodied people get angry that they can't find a front-row parking spot.

Reasons this behavior is nonsensical:

1. You probably need the exercise anyway.

2. We live in Phoenix. It's nice out, for Pete's sake. Even if you live in Michigan (poor soul), get out of the car for a few minutes. The fresh air is good for you.

3. If you're trying to get close because you're "in a hurry", you just wasted 5 minutes looking for a perfect spot.

4 (and this is the biggest): Other people need the spot more than you do. Someday, when you really need the spot, you will wish that other people were a little more deferential about the whole thing.

Case in point: when I am eventually a mother, struggling with two writhing toddlers or newborns or whatever the heck is going on there, and I have to also cart along a stroller, a dozen toys and three or four binkies, you'd better believe I'm going to want that front spot. And when I'm old as the hills and I can barely stump into the store on my brand new hip, I'm going to wish that the young people who had no problem walking a few more yards had left some spaces up front.

*Obvious exception to this general rule of principle: rainy days. Because mothers are always checking the weather report and they are always prepared for rain. They even usually knock themselves out to buy a 40$ raincoat and cute little matching boots for their little ones, even if they only wear it five times before they grow out of it. It's just a mom thing. It is what it is. Maybe someday I will understand this. And old people never go out when it's rainy anyway because their joints are aching from rheumatism and an easterly wind. So on these days I feel justified parking my unprepared self into the closest spot that I see*

You know what I really don't get? People who get mad when they don't have a front row parking spot...At. The. Gym.
