morocco is a place not on my list of places to travel, and even more so after reading your post! love the photos though; you're right about it being a photogenic city! cheers! katie
Love the honesty! Sounds like us and Egypt. We hated being constantly harassed in Egypt, although we found it beautiful and we loved the food. How was the food? I still want to visit Morocco, because as you say, to each his (or her) own.
Katie - leafing through the pictures is totally better sometimes than the actual experience - especially THIS time!
Asa - we've been thinking about Egypt but put it on hold after this last trip because we realized that it would probably be more of the same! If you go to Morocco though, have lots of tagine - the food is awesome!
I quickly learned in Israel/Palestine that you really just have to be forceful/rude. But I don't think it's perceived that way-I think we just assume a certain style of manners and think it's cross cultural.
@maven - so true. But then the terrible part is when you're rude and then they get offended and say, "I'm just trying to help! f&^%$ing tourists!" and then you feel awful because you know that they have every right to hate you because you were, in fact, rude. Happened to us a few times. Le sigh.
Kaley - I think I need to start incorporating the word "weenie" more into my life. Also, I agree....never again. It just does NOT make for a happy vacation.
I was in Morocco when I was 10...with my parents, of course. My favorite memory was riding the camel...a total trip! I do remember that we had a local guide who kept most of the other locals from accosting us as we walked through the market place, but the Casbah was a very scary experience...especially for a 10-year-old. The walkways between buildings are so narrow and people "flying" by in long garb looked and felt like ghosts. I'm glad you had the experience and thanks so much for sharing your beautiful pics...it brings back many wonderful memories of foreign travel with my parents.
I totally understand your thoughts! I've been to Morocco twice, and I had very similar feelings. Each time I returned from my trip saying, "Never Again!" I just found the culture to be too aggressive, especially in the big cities like Marrakesh. I was even physically assaulted by a girl wanting to give me a henna tattoo- that really left a bad impression on me! I did have the opportunity the last time I was there to go to a small town in the mountains which was much more peaceful and quite different. Yet, despite all this, I always find myself wanting to give it another shot. I'd love to go now with Ale since he's never been and I've never been there as a married woman-- perhaps easier? It's also so damn picturesque that the budding photography lover in me wants to go back with my DSLR and just take pictures! Yours btw are gorgeous!!!
I went last year, and I know what you mean. I liked it, but it was definitely out of my comfort zone, and I was a little uncomfortable at times! Love your pics!
I really think it depends on where you go, I went but with someone who is from there and I was no where near the typically tousist spots. I had a wonderful time. I often hear people say the same about New Yorkers and how rude and aggressive we are so....I guess everyone has their own experiences. p.s. I enjoyed your pics.
I've never had any desire to go to Morocco. I would, however, love to shop there!! I can almost smell that row of leather from here, ah.....I need one of those leather bags for sure :) love the architecture too. great pics!! now I don't have to go to Morocco.

ReplyDeleteYou were brave enough to go! I've never gone because I'm a weenie and I hate being harassed. I was semi-harassed in Jamaica and...never again.
